why is it important to start with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Cultures when journeying into Cultural competence?

Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander peoples have a unique place within a multicultural society. For many a primary goal is Cultural preservation through separation and isolation rather than seeking a place within a multicultural society.

The history of Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander peoples in Australia differs greatly from those who came here as immigrants.

Many people are not aware that the federal government and some state governments have specific moral and legal rights and responsibilities toward Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander peoples, unlike other groups.

It is important that providers who work with and for Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander peoples understand the issues specific to them in a multicultural society.
